Rachel Elnaugh is one of Britain’s highest profile female entrepreneurs. Founder of Red Letter Days, Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2002, Rachel originally shot to fame as one of the original Dragons in 2005. She is an Entrepreneur in Residence at the British Library Business & IP Centre, an Ambassador for the Prince’s Trust; and in 2008 won the IAB ‘Champion for Entrepreneurship in the UK’ award.
Managing your motivation is extremely important. I’ve been in business for 20 years now and have been helping mentor others for the past 5 years, and I would say that managing motivation is THE most important skill you can master as an entrepreneur.
Keeping your energy high is really easy when everything is flowing – signing new bands, doing deals, money coming in. But it’s a lot trickier when things get tough - phones not ringing, people rejecting your proposals, cash drying up.
Marcela’s biggest challenge is to create a strong brand identity which instantly portrays that her food is Authentic, Mexican, Zingy, Fresh and Delicious!
People make judgements about both people and products within about 5 seconds, so I always worry when I see tired dreary labels and packaging – especially on food products. Subliminal messages also have big impact – so even something as seemingly insignificant as packing her sauces in brown cardboard boxes suggests the food inside is drab.
Choosing an office for a new business is a big decision - I am really glad that your attempts to find a new ‘home’ are procrastinating! It is a sign that you are probably not clear what you want. When things aren’t working in business it is a real sign to stop pushing and try a different tack.
I would advise the two of you to go back to the drawing board to really understand and be clear about what you want from your new site/office.
